Adjustable lumbar is not a lumbar pillow
Genuine adjustable lumbar support moves up and down (height) and often in and out (depth) so you can position it where your lower back curves. A fixed "lumbar pillow" can't be repositioned; a "dynamic" or "self-adjusting" lumbar is a spring-loaded follower that moves with you but can't be locked to a chosen spot. On a spec sheet, look for the words height-adjustable and depth-adjustable, not just "lumbar." See Adjustable Lumbar Explained.
Synchro-tilt vs tilt-lock
A basic tilt (tilt-lock) rocks the whole seat-and-back as one unit and locks at a fixed angle. A synchro-tilt reclines the backrest and seat in a coordinated ratio (commonly around 2:1 — the back leans more than the seat) so your feet stay planted as you lean. Seat-depth adjustment is the most-skipped spec
Seat-depth adjustment slides the seat pan forward or back to set the gap between the seat's front edge and the back of your knees for your leg length. Too deep and shorter sitters perch forward and lose the backrest; too shallow and taller sitters get no thigh support. Many mid-tier chairs omit it, so tall or short buyers should treat it as a primary filter. See Seat-Depth Adjustment.
Mesh vs foam is a tradeoff, not a ranking
A mesh seat and back run cooler and can't compress and bottom out the way foam can, but an all-mesh seat is firmer and some find the front edge sharp. Molded-foam seats feel more cushioned initially but lose resilience (compression set) over years of daily use. Many chairs use a mesh back for airflow and a foam seat for cushion. Gas-cylinder classes
The gas cylinder that raises and lowers the seat is graded by a BIFMA/DIN class. Class 3 and Class 4 are the office grades; Class 4 is the more robust and is used by better mid-tier and contract chairs, while very cheap chairs may ship a Class 2 or unmarked cylinder. Warranty length is the real quality signal
Warranty length is the most honest durability signal a maker gives, because they're betting on how long the chair lasts. Contract brands back chairs for many years — Steelcase's limited warranty runs up to 12 years — while typical budget chairs carry a 1-to-3-year limited warranty. "Rated for 8 hours" is marketing, not a spec
There is no standardized test that certifies a chair for a number of hours per day, so an "8+ hour ergonomic" claim is copy, not a specification. What actually determines suitability for long sitting is adjustability (can you fit it to your body?) and the durability of the mechanism, cylinder, and materials. Assembly reality
Nearly every chair in this band ships flat-packed and is self-assembled — typically base to casters, cylinder to base, seat to mechanism, then back and arms — usually a 20–45 minute job with the included hardware. More-adjustable chairs (4D arms, headrest, seat-depth slider) have more parts and take longer. Flat-pack is normal for the price, not a defect. See Chair Assembly Reality.
BIFMA testing, explained
BIFMA (the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) publishes the US voluntary safety and durability test standards for office furniture — for example ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 for general-purpose office chairs, covering cyclic load, tilt, and stability. "BIFMA tested" means a chair was evaluated against those protocols — a meaningful baseline, though it is voluntary and "tested to" is not the same as independently certified. Weight capacity is a manufacturer rating
A chair's weight capacity is always a manufacturer rating, not an independently verified limit, and it assumes normal, evenly-distributed use. Most mid-tier chairs are rated up to about 250–300 lb, with some to 400 lb; the rating ties to the frame, base, and gas-cylinder class. Near a chair's limit, size up or choose a big-and-tall model with a higher stated rating and a Class 4 cylinder. See Chair Weight Ratings Truth.
Armrest adjustability (1D–4D)
Armrest adjustability is described by directions of movement: 1D = height only, 2D = height plus width or depth, 3D = height, width, and depth, 4D = all plus pivot/angle. "Flip-up" arms swing out of the way but usually adjust in height only. More directions let you support your forearms so your shoulders relax — a fit factor, not a defect if absent. Gaming chair vs office chair
A racing-style gaming chair uses a high bucket back, foam seat, bolstered wings, and often a fixed-curve build with a pillow lumbar; an ergonomic office chair prioritizes independent adjustment (lumbar, seat depth, synchro-tilt, arms) and often a mesh back for airflow.
